41 Harrington Gardens is a detached house, designed by Sir Ernest George and Harold Peto and built between 1882-83. Despite being one of ten houses designed by the duo, all houses differ dramatically in their appearance due to the unique influence of the different clients commissioning the builds. The ten dwellings are situated in the Courtfield Conservation area, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. In 1969, the house was granted grade II* listing for its architectural and historic value as a unique building. Number 41 is a smaller dwelling compared with its neighbour number 39. The two were built at the same time, and although detached, they have an unusual boundary that partly connects the buildings and also provides a fire escape.
An analysis of the buildings history was undertaken to understand the importance of the building’s historic and architectural significance. The proposals involved extensive internal alterations and modifications including the removal of a internal lift. Detailed negotiations were carried out with English Heritage and Westminster Planning Department and the contract to carry out the work was negotiated with a number of directly nominated sub contractors and main contractor.
